This is now the new City of Hope. It used to be synonymous with parties, music and food. Now no one thinks of Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, or Gumbo. New Orleans is the first major American city to get drastically redefined in the 21st century, and it's up to us, how we do that.
Project: NOLA is my one-man effort to help this great city rebuild and comeback. As a student traveling around Europe, I heard about the effects of Katrina and Rita. Friends of mine were going in to help locals and begin recovery efforts. After involvement in community groups and lots of complaining about how nothing seemed to be getting done, I decided to take a small project that I could hold myself accountable for and simply get it done.
I happened to be aware of a great online math tutoring website called Hotmath that could help the kids struggling with poor materials in NOLA. This is where I decided to focus my energy. I decided to raise money and purchase a citywide license from the company. However, Hotmath wanted to help the students and instead authorized me to distribute a free password to Hotmath, in New Orleans only, for free, to schools and individuals, for charitable purposes. I want to thank Hotmath for this very charitable action. This subscription will remain free until Dec. 31, 2006.
The message here is clear, "Saving New Orleans through Personal Involvement." This is the only way we can combat political hardships. Personal Involvement isn't selfish, in-fighting isn't going to help. We have to band together. My proposition is this: Find one small problem that speaks to you and tell the world. Personalize that message. "This is MY cause!" Take responsibility for that cause and do what you can to fix it. Not only will your community be behind you, but so will I.
The secondary goals of Project: NOLA are to create a community of action and to raise money for future efforts. I encourage you to get personally involved in the rebuilding effort in whatever your area of expertise is, by visiting our "Join The Team" page. I will also be selling merchandise and accepting donations to help the defray costs I incur in New Orleans. I'm out here doing whatever I have the resources for. At the end of the day it's me and my bank account. As a 19 year old at the end of a backpacking trip, I'm not going to be able to fund anything past distribution on my bank account. I can barely fund that. If you can't personally get involved, please visit the Project Tees or Donations pages and contribute that way.
